Earlier this year, the Australian cricket team were the subject of a major ball-tampering scandal that led to some of the leading players being banned from the team. Like many Australians, I found myself feeling hugely disappointed about the whole affair. There may be nothing new about cheating in sport, but when it happens in the ‘gentleman’s game’, it seems like a real punch in the guts to all things good and noble. Yet whilst we may not like dishonesty, we have to admit that we often commend people for having a ‘winning at all costs’ mentality.
