What is Unashamedly Ethical?

Unashamedly Ethical is a campaign promoting ethics, values, and clean living.

Origins

In July 2000 a Christian businessman, Graham Power, received what he felt was a clear ‘instruction’ from God based upon a scripture found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chron 7:14 NKJV)The vision was to call Christians from all denominations to gather together for a day of repentance and prayer, thereby fulfilling the first condition of the promise of 2 Chron 7:14 - that we must ''humble ourselves, and pray and seek God''s face''.

Against all odds, 45000 people arrived at Newlands Rugby Stadium in Cape Town to attend a day of repentance and prayer. This initiative has now spread around the world and has become one of the greatest mobilisations of the church in history. Hundreds of millions of people now gather each year to pray on the “Global Day of Prayer”. On 31st May 2009, Pentecost Sunday, we celebrated the first year in which all 220 nations of the world held prayer gatherings for the “Global Day of Prayer”.

“Turning from our wicked ways”

In October 2006 Graham Power had a similar experience in which he felt the Lord giving a second detailed instruction regarding a campaign promoting ‘values, ethics and clean living’. This was to fulfil the second condition of the promise of 2 Chron 7:14 that we must ’turn from our wicked ways’.In response to this, the “Unashamedly Ethical” campaign was officially launched in March 2009. Global Day of Prayer and Unashamedly Ethical work closely together in the faith that God will ‘hear from heaven, forgive our sin and heal our land’.

How the campaign works

The “Unashamedly Ethical” campaign has three clear aspects to it:
  1. THE CHALLENGE: The campaign challenges God’s people to make a personal commitment to good values, ethics and clean living. Then we also challenge leaders in the marketplace – leaders of business, church or government organisations – to commit their entire organisations to ethical practices. These public commitments to ethics are made by signing the relevant Unashamedly Ethical Commitment forms.
  2. THE ONLINE DIRECTORY: We register all Organisational signatories on a central directory thereby creating an ‘online Yellow Pages’ of ethical businesses. Through this directory we hope to encourage God’s people to support each other in the marketplace, knowing that all signatories are accountable to the ombudsman.
  3. THE OMBUDSMAN: By signing the Unashamedly Ethical commitment form, each signatory makes him/herself accountable to their fellow signatories for their behaviour. This accountability works through the person of the Unashamedly Ethical “ombudsman”. This independent ombudsman will investigate any complaint against a signatory to ensure that ethical standards are upheld by all signatories. In this way, when anyone sources goods and services from our online directory, they have the peace of mind knowing that if the service provider is unethical, they will be able to lodge a complaint with the ombudsman and an investigation will ensue.
